In an expansive area of more than 950 hectares within the borders of Berlare, Laarne, Wetteren and Wichelen, the Scheldt regains its room to move. Thanks to the flood control areas and wet pastures here, this region is now much better protected against flooding. Be sure to plan a day trip to the Kalkense Meersen and come explore this breath-taking area along the Scheldt on foot, on a bicycle or in a boat!

In 2018 the international organisation PIANC awarded this project with the Working with Nature Certificate of Recognition.
